People define their world around them by the places they can access and that they have an (at least abstract) understanding off. Rarely do people go to places they have no maps of. As a tourist, the first course of action in a new city is often the walk to the tourist information and get a map.

I arrived in Dublin not as a tourist, but as a student some 8 years ago. Likewise, I scanned the maps available for one that would allow me to get to know my new home city. Distances too far to walk had to be covered by bike or public transport. With the absence of a proper public transport map then, I found myself limiting my own journeys to a tiny area, one that I knew and had a map of (albeit) one in my mind.
